I’m contantly installing Firefox on new computers or new installs or whatnot, and I’m constantly having to remember which addons I use. Oh, eventually I get them all back as I need them, but still. It’d be nicer to just have them available, yes?
Also, you might find a more technical bent here to Firefox plugins… this is because I generally use Google Chrome for my browsing needs, but I use Firefox as my web toolbox and tricorder.
So here’s a list of the Firefox addons I personally use:
- Chromatabs: Set to generate the tab colors by domain name, incredibly useful.
- Download Statusbar: Adds a staus bar to the bottom of the browser showing the status of all downloads. A Chrome feature I love.
- Firebug: Naturally! How else do you plan to debug those error messages?
- Fission: Eyecandy; the progress bar for the current tab appears behind the URL bar.
- Flagfox: Informational plugin; shows you where in the world the server is located.
- JSONview: Incredibly useful for seeing the structure of a returned JSON object when developing JSON powered APIs.
- Live HTTP Headers: Why constantly run to curl to pull up headers when you can have ‘em right there in Firefox? Naturally!
- Locationbar²: Another Chrome feature I appreciate: Highlighting of the domain name in the URL for easy identification.
- Omnibar: My favorite feature in Chrome: the search bar and URL bar are one and the same.
- Server Spy: Tells you what server software the end site is using. Also more “fun information” than actual utility.
- Tabs Open Relative: All other browsers do this by default, even the dread IE. I’ve gotten used to it.
- Tab Progress Bar: Adds a progress bar for each tab.
- YSlow?: Yahoo’s YSlow? plugin is quite useful for debugging speed issues on sites. The only painful part about YSlow is when you’re trying to optomize somebody else’s code; perfect if you’re starting code from scratch, more painful if you’re trying to optimize
Themes:
- Strata Aero: Even when I’m running on Linux… I just like the Windows theme for firefox.
