I’ve mentioned before Pokemon Abridged Version, written and performed by HomeStarRunnerTron on Youtube. It had excellent voice acting (for a parody) and a quick wit, very in line with “Abridged Series.”
The idea of “Abridged Series” is to take a 30 minute cartoon and shorten it to about 10-15 minutes, overlaying new dialog that somewhat matches the original intent of the show whilst changing the exact words to be much funnier.
HSRT’s Pokemon Abridged videos were pulled from YouTube, apparently due to a mix of using Pokemon footage and some clips of some fameous songs. DCMA takedowns for a parody? OF COURSE! Welcome to the new free world.
Various clips I’ve found of the video around are of random quality, don’t stream well, or (shock) are pulled for DCMA violations. So I’m hosting my own streams on my own server of this excellent PARODY. Enjoy.
I’d have to say, my all-time favorite cartoon as a kid has to have been Inspector Gadget. I loved both Sonic the Hedgehog series, watched Super Mario Brother Super Show when I could find it, and even watched some Captain Planet when I had to. But the all-time favorite slot belonged to Inspector Gadget.
However, due to some bad editing in the end credits, I spent most of my whole young life with a strong, incorrect, belief. See, everyone I knew had no idea who Dr. Claw was. But I knew. I knew who it was, and nobody believed me.
Dr Claw was Chief Quimby!
Oh sure, “Chief Quimby” always seemed to help Inspector Gadget foil Dr Claw’s schemes… but it was the truth. I didn’t know why Dr. Claw would constantly foil his own plans, but then again, I’m not an evil supervillian now am I? Maybe Dr. Claw wanted the terror and attention of a supervillan without ever actually having to produce an evil plan that worked?
Like Clark Kent and Superman, Chief Quimby and Dr. Claw never appeared on screen together. Coincidence? We only ever get to see the back of a chair and a gauntleted hand. That’s no kind of indentifying mark!
But I had even better proof than this. And it was right in our face! Everyone could see it! It was right there in the ending credits, about 30 seconds in:
PROOF! Dr. Claw’s voice, and Chief Quimby flappin’ his gums! It had to be true!
For years I believed sincerely that Chief Quimby was Dr. Claw. Arguments took place between me and best friends about who Dr. Claw was. But I knew. Just look at Chief Quimby’s face there, in the last take, just before we see his Clawmobile fly off! He’s giving Gadget a very dangerous look.
I couldn’t believe that Penny and Brain never picked up on it.
To this day, I’m not totally convinced of Chief Quimby’s innocence. Does he like cats? Has smoking that pipe given him a raspy voice? Why does he keep giving Gadget stupid missions written on exploding paper? Perhaps the world may never know.
As a side note, I had such a little-kid-crush on Penny. She was so pretty, and she liked computers. ‘Course, I’d never tell anyone (girls have cooties and all that). In fact, if I was totally honest, I watched Inspector Gadget to see Penny save Gadget… never really to see what stupid mistakes Gadget would make. That… and I always knew, if I watched hard enough, the Chief would slip up and tell us about his secret identity!
One of the latest bandwagons (or should I say bomb carts) in the TF2/YouTube community is to take well known songs, and replace the melody with tone shifted copies of the sound file of the Team Fortress 2 scout saying “BOINK!” and “BONK!”
Most are incredibly lame, but this one just makes me laugh and laugh and laugh.
I’m working with a Youtube user named TylecAsroc on his fandub of Spice and Wolf, a very enjoyable anime.
I started as just a voice actor, but ended up expanding my role by presenting him with new titles for his fandub, based heavily on the original titles of the show.
The new video was produced in Adobe Premiere CS4, of which no doubt you will hear in the future.
I also wanted to do this to learn how to upload HD video to youtube. It’s easier than you think, and looks oh so good.
Warning: Anime “artsy” “god-girl-is-naked-but-it-looks-like-a-white-leotard-kinda” in the video at the beginning. Those wacky Japanese.
One final note; until I had done this encoding route for YouTube, I simply didn’t appreciate the power of the H.264 codec for having great picture in tiny (relatively) files.
It’s not the final version. Changes have already been made.
HomeStarRunnerTron, a cool kid on YouTube, once put together a little parody of the Pokemon TV Series in the format of YuGiOh Abridged. The idea is to take a TV show and chop it down to size, replacing the dialog with something silly while somehow keeping the original story flowing in your altered universe.
This kid inspires me. As silly as it sounds, both as a guy who makes video and a guy trying to crack into Voice Acting, this kid is cool. I found his video one day on YouTube and was pleasantly surprised… pretty much all of the main voices were done by he himself, matching the voice actors from the show close enough (except for Gary, who’s voice is just perfect to match the created character).
So, I present, Pokemon: Abridged (a few more thoughts after the videos)
I got in touch with him to tell him how impressed I and my friends were with his performance, and we got to chatting a little bit. He’s a cool kid. Why aren’t the videos on YouTube? Because apparently the parody detector of YouTube’s automated filters crapped out, or somebody at Nintendo/4Kids lacks a sense of humor and submitted as DCMA request (in this case file this under “flagrant misuse”). Luckily the videos aren’t completely gone! Well, it pretty much is, actually. I’ve found part one on a site with a broken embedded player (maybe you can get it to work), and part two on youtube filmed through hypercam D: Isn’t this the kind of thing Copyright is supposed to encourage people to make?
My friends and I were so impressed we made him the Third Real Life Guest Star of our webcomic, Missing Number (he’s the kid with the Pikachu in the top right hand corner):
The poster above his head “Do you like to say Duhhh?! I do.” Comes from a misunderstanding of the line right after Bulbasaur showed up in the first video segment above (the little green guy).
On a side note, we will never name a project after a computer glitch ever again. 1 out of every 5 issues had some kind of debilitating error that caused us to slip deadlines. Am I superstitious? I am now.
We’re discussing the possibility of reviving the comic. Hmm. That’d be fun…
My sister handed me a link to this video… it’s like a scene from a horror movie. It’s great.
This was great. The cat has an interesting stalking procedure: the Bugblatter Beast procedure… or something similar… if you don’t see the cat move then **the cat didn’t move**.
Weather is beautiful. 70 degrees, overcast, wind out of the north. Feels like a nice late October Texas day :D 2009-08-16
Found car wash. Pretty ancient. Did a decent job, but had to by full 2 dollar rounds D: 2009-08-16
Our A/C died or something and the temp has slowly climbed from 70 to 80 degrees. The Inn gave us a fan... Victory! Down a degree in 30 mins. 2009-08-14
Nice! Minnesota thunderstorm. Pretty. Chilly outside, as tstorms tend to be. New wildlife sounds complaining about the storm, though! 2009-08-14
Yep, In honor of my move from Kemp, Texas to Park Rapids, Minnesota, I've renamed my blog to AutoDMC's PICAYUNE INTELLIGENCE in honor of the newspaper of Frostbite Falls, Minnesota from Rocky and Bullwinkle. I'll be using this blog to discuss my thoughts as a transplanted Texan about Minnesota (in addition to the regular fluff I post), so a newspaper theme seemed apropos.
